Why do melt pumps need insulation or heating systems?

2026-05-06

In the processing of polymer materials, melt pumps are primarily used to convey high-temperature, high-viscosity molten materials, such as plastic melts, resins, rubber, hot-melt adhesives, and synthetic fiber polymers. Since these materials are highly temperature-sensitive, temperature fluctuations can directly affect their flowability, viscosity, pressure stability, and final product quality. Therefore, melt pumps are typically designed with insulation or heating systems to ensure the equipment operates under stable temperature conditions.

First, insulation or heating mechanisms help maintain the material in a molten state. During operation, if the pump housing temperature falls below the material’s required process temperature, the melt may experience increased viscosity, reduced flowability, or even localized solidification. This not only increases the pump’s operating resistance but may also cause issues such as insufficient flow, pressure fluctuations, and difficulty starting; in severe cases, it can lead to overloading and damage to gears, bearings, or the drive system.

Second, a stable temperature helps ensure metering accuracy and delivery stability. Melt pumps are positive-displacement gear pumps, and their delivery performance is closely related to factors such as material viscosity, pump chamber clearances, and rotational speed. When temperature fluctuations are significant, material viscosity changes accordingly, thereby affecting the pump’s output flow rate and pressure stability. Through heating or insulation, the impact of temperature fluctuations on the process can be minimized, keeping the melt in a good flow state and enhancing the continuity and consistency of production processes such as extrusion, pelletizing, spinning, and coating.

Furthermore, the insulation structure helps reduce energy consumption and minimizes the risk of material stagnation. A well-designed insulation system minimizes heat loss from the pump body, enabling the equipment to reach process temperature more quickly and maintain a constant temperature during operation. For heat-sensitive materials, temperatures that are too low can cause poor flow, while temperatures that are too high may lead to degradation, carbonization, or discoloration; therefore, stable and uniform temperature control is particularly important.

The melt pumps manufactured by Tianjin Ruicheng Pump Industry Co., Ltd. can be configured with electric heating, thermal oil heating, or insulation jackets based on the characteristics of different media and on-site conditions, meeting the requirements for stable conveyance under high-temperature, high-viscosity, and high-pressure conditions. A well-designed insulation and heating system is not only the foundation for the normal operation of melt pumps but also a critical factor in improving production efficiency, reducing failure rates, and ensuring product quality.
